Given the high level of patient contact experienced by nurses coupled with the numerous points of data collection, nurses and administrators have a significant role in infection control.
So much so that the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists specified additional environmental cleaning procedures to their guidelines:
Work surfaces and portable equipment (e.g., telephones, computer keyboards) can become contaminated with toxins and should be cleaned and decontaminated regularly with an appropriate low-level disinfectant (e.g., detergent) when visibly soiled and after completion of all procedures. Certain pathogens can survive for long periods on environmental surfaces if not treated appropriately.
